Algebra and harmony
Modern technologies in sound transmission are intended for perfection of all parts of audio tract, because the quality of final sound is determined not only by components, but by connections as well. While choosing the components (including the cables) you need to remember, that their quality should be of the same level. That’s because the system will depend directly on the weakest component, even though all others will be perfect.
Till recently existed the opinion of impossibility to hear or to measure the distortion introduced by cables. Classical physics justifies this approach by strict framework of the ideal conductor model. In this case they talk about impedance, inductance and capacity of the cables. Mechanism of sound perception is a very sensitive instrument, so while using audio systems it’s not correct to assume the ideality of the conductor. Cable as a structure is not only a conductor, but a complex system. One should see it as an important component of an audio system, which has to meet high technical and operational requirements. That’s why the approach to processes which take place inside the cables needs to note physical, psychological, biological and many other laws. Moreover, in order to investigate into all factors of how the cable works, one needs to note the specific area of its use and be always ready for new puzzles, which nature gives us.
Sound conductor The best natural material for audio signal transmission is copper. For a conductor the utmost quality is the degree of admixtures content. However our numerous tests proved that the balance of certain quantity of some elements after refinement may have a positive effect on sound, than their absence. This phenomenon characterizes the fundamental law of nature diversity. We can take distilled water as an analog, which is not useful, but harmful for health. By the way, we breathe 100% oxygen. Thanks to our painstaking investigations, we found a way to get the optimal balance between copper and admixtures – BRC (Balanced Refinement Conductor) – which lets the conductor correspond to the sound transmission requirements.
Besides, we should take into account the skin-effect. The impedance of the conductor is different on high, mid and low frequencies. The sound image gets narrow as per timbre, it loses details and volume as a result. In order to fight this effect we use multi-wire conductors with sophisticated twist. By analogy with the acoustic reverb effect, the signal is divided into several parts which flow with different speed inside the cable. It’s impossible to fix this phenomenon with modern devices, because the amplitude of the secondary signals is much lower than the main one and their tardiness is thousand of split seconds. But our brain can hear the difference in sound arrival due to binaural hearing. The threshold of audibility is nearly 10 microseconds! Thanks to this we can easily orient ourselves in the sound space.
Theory and practice
While designing the cable we are trying to foresee the real maintenance conditions.
As everyone knows a lot of processes in nature are connected with the vibration effect. In one case it has a good application (speech and hearing), in other causes it possesses the negative effect. One of the best examples are cables. Under influence of internal and external sources of vibration the so-called “microphone effect” takes place. It is caused by accumulation of static charge and physical qualities of the materials. The acoustic noise causes extra vibration – confused sound oscillation which arises due to system components work as well. The vibrations lead to distortions in signal transmission, worsening of contacts, arcing and variable inductance.
To fight the vibration effect we use the isolation materials with high-damping qualities: Elastollan®, SAF PE, CAF PE, SPVC, Teflon, cotton and others. Extra reduce of microphone effect is achieved by using different antistatic additions.
The particular attention is paid to electromagnetic distortion defense. Special screens construction and twist of isolated wires ensures good defense from electrical equipment and communications.
Taking care of pleasure, which customer should get, we don’t forget about the aesthetics of the product. Each detail should be admirable, but at the same time it should not distract from the essentials.
